In Ground Foundation Above Ground Foundation
Cost More costly due to additional grading reinforced steel and concrete Less costly due to less construction and foundation work
Scale Service & Repairs In some cases more costly due to confined area restrictions which often require gas detection devices and operator safety harnesses to be used No confined space entry required; can be serviced from the deck of the scale
Cleaning Done manually; can be time consuming Quick and easy; done with a water hose or air compressor from the side of the scale
Scale Inspection Performed from inside the in ground pit Can be performed above ground
Restrictions or Hazards Some states require specified clearances underneath the scale; may require compliance with OSHA and confined space regulations Some states have specified clearances required underneath the scale
Approaches 10 feet; flat and level Ramps
Ramp Requirements None needed; flat approach Typically ~20 feet on each end of the scale; requires more real estate to install and operate
Electrical Requirements Needed for sump pump if no gravity drain is present None; no sump pump or drainage needed
