Two Howe mechanical truck scales at Cemex in Redwood City received extensive repairs by three of our senior technicians, Jeremy, Jose and Mike. The two truck scales each had over 20 rotted non-functioning deck outriggers and corroded coping that was impacting the scale’s accuracy. One of the two scales also had its exit end showing extensive erosion and crumbling.

The multi-day job addressing these issues required re-constructing new outriggers to support the scale deck and saw cutting around the sides of the scale to remove the corroded coping and replacing the coping with angle iron secured to the new outriggers. To correct the eroding exit of the scale, QSU removed the last 4” of concrete and welded steel tubing to the scale beams, providing a robust surface for existing trucks.

Since these extensive repairs required the scales to be out of service for a couple of days, QSU also used this time to complete a grease service on the scales. QSU recommends grease services to be performed every 2-3 years on mechanical truck scales. The grease service creates a protective layer for the pivots, bearings, and lever system against debris, water and other damaging material. Greasing also prevents hardened components from deteriorating, thus extending the life of the scale.
